Name the emotion or dynamic you sense in the counterpart with phrases like "It seems like…" or "It sounds like…".

A label is a verbal observation that names an emotion, fear, or hesitation in the room. By giving the feeling a name without judgement, you defuse it: negative emotions lose intensity once they are surfaced, and positive ones reinforce when acknowledged. Labels turn the negotiation from positions versus positions into a shared examination of the underlying dynamics.
